Brick, Harbour and Hansa History – those were the three main arguments that got Stralsund and its twin UNESCO applicant Wismar on the World Heritage List in June 2002. Holding unusual historic and cultural treasures, Stralsund had long been known for its imposing Old Town architecture, well-maintained city structure and a multitude of fascinating events.
If you are interested in finding out more about the whole application process of Stralsund and Wismar – ranging from the initial idea of becoming World Heritage to the actual addition to the UNESCO list – please visit http://www.wismar-stralsund.de/en.
Additionally and in regard to challenges that arose during the application process, the cities of Stralsund and Wismar set up a nationwide foundation called “Deutsche Stiftung Welterbe”. Using their know-how and comprehensive financial funds this foundation is trying to support potential World Heritage sites in order to protect their historical and cultural wealth.
